Production Analysis

Reading about compression teaches you what a compressor does. Rebuilding a track teaches you when you need one. That difference is the entire point of this page.

  • rebuild, do not copy
  • layer by layer
  • an arrangement map

In short

When you listen to a track and think those drums sound tight, you have an impression. When you try to make drums that tight and fail, you have a question, and a question is what makes the next hour of listening useful.

The feeling

Rebuilding is the fastest learning method in production, and almost nobody does it because it produces nothing you can release.

How it works

Analyse in layers rather than all at once. First the arrangement map: which sections, how long, what enters and leaves where. Then the low end, then the rhythm, then the vocal treatment, then the space. Each pass answers a different question and none of them is the whole track.

Where you run into this

  • A track that turns out to have four elements where you heard ten
  • A production trick you can only hear once you try to copy it
  • A reference that solved a problem you did not know you had

In practice

Rebuilding is not copying. You take the structure and the decisions, not the material, and the result is your own. If you are lifting audio, that is a different activity with different rules.
